Dr. John Buckley

Biography

Dr Buckley is a Reader in Movement Biomechanics at the School of Computing and Engineering at the University of Bradford (UK). He teaches courses in clinical movement analysis, biomechanics and rehabilitation engineering, and undertakes inter-disciplinary research in the areas of clinical biomechanics and human movement. His research interests are in developing and using motion analysis approaches to determine the movement adaptations and/or compensatory mechanisms used for locomotion by individuals with musculoskeletal abnormalities, problems or dysfunction, and/or by those with sensory impairment. He has published over 90 academic papers in both rehabilitation-specific journals, as well as multi-disciplinary journals such as Experimental Gerontology, Experimental Brain Research and PLoS One. Dr Buckley is a member of the International Society for Posture and Gait Research, and Fellow of The Higher Education Academy.

Research

Current work includes, understanding visual performance under dynamic testing conditions and its association with gait safety and fear of falling; how movement outcomes from simple everyday tasks, measured using inertial measurement units or using smartphones, predict stairs falls risk and/or lower body neuromuscular performance; and how visual computing can be used to help diagnose the movement disorders associated with Parkinson’s disease.
