Biography

    Karen Khan is Associate Professor and Professional Lead for Midwifery and Reproductive Health at the University of Bradford, where she also holds the statutory role of Lead Midwife for Education (LME). With over 20 years in higher education and a clinical background in general nursing and midwifery, her work spans professional leadership, curriculum development, and maternity safety research.


    Karen's academic foundation includes an MA in Women's Studies (University of York), which continues to inform her feminist methodological perspectives in both teaching and research. Her current PhD (University of Bradford) explores clinical vigilance in the management of labour, drawing on Safety-II principles to understand how skilled practitioners sustain safe care in complex, dynamic environments.
    A longstanding interest in immersive simulation has shaped her educational practice, most notably through co-development of In the Dock™ - a mock coroner's court simulation now extended interprofessionally - alongside collaborative work on therapeutic communication and emotional intelligence in healthcare education.


    At national level, Karen is a member of the NMC Strategic Reference Group, participates in the UK LME network and contributes to Local Maternity Systems.
