Matt Hardy is an Assistant Professor in Human Biology with interests in bioscience education, academic writing and the language of science.
Following a PhD and postdoctoral research in cardiovascular physiology, his academic interests have transitioned towards education and metascience. His research examines how scientific knowledge is communicated, interpreted and evaluated, with particular interests in educational linguistics, evidence synthesis, critical appraisal and the influence of generative artificial intelligence on scientific communication. He also investigates how the language of physiology has evolved through diachronic analyses of the scientific literature, exploring changes in scientific communication across the discipline.
He teaches human biology, physiology, pharmacology and academic skills across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes and has extensive experience of curriculum design, assessment and digital learning.
His current research combines educational research, corpus linguistics and AI to investigate how emerging technologies are changing scientific writing, reasoning and judgement. Through this work, he aims to improve how students, researchers and educators communicate, interpret and evaluate scientific evidence, while contributing to a broader understanding of the evolution of scientific language in physiology.
