Biography

Dr. Attah Boakye is a distinguished scholar and
practitioner whose career spans academia, professional practice, and industry
leadership. He holds an exceptional portfolio of qualifications [PhD, FCCA,
ACCA, SFHEA, ACICM, CQRM, MBA, MSc, BCom (Hons)], reflecting both depth and
breadth in accounting, finance, risk, and technology. He is a professor.
Extraordinaire in the Department of Financial Intelligence at the University of
South Africa and currently serves as an Associate Professor of Accounting at
the University of Bradford. Prior to this, he was an Assistant Professor of
Accounting at the University of Nottingham Business School and is recognised as
a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA). He is also a Fellow of
the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (FCCA), a Certified
Quantitative Risk Management Expert (CQRM), and an Associate Member of the
Chartered Institute of Credit Management (ACICM).
His academic credentials include a PhD in
Accounting, an MBA in Financial Management, an MSc in Information Technology, a
BCom (Hons), a Postgraduate Diploma in Research, and Qualified Teacher Status
(QTS) in Mathematics. His research expertise spans auditing, corporate
governance and reporting, taxation, quantitative risk management, environmental
accounting, cybersecurity, and artificial intelligence, positioning him at the
forefront of interdisciplinary inquiry in accounting and financial innovation.
Dr. Attah Boakye previously served as the faculty
director of the degree apprenticeship program at the University of Hull (FBPL),
where he provided strategic leadership and strengthened industry-university
partnerships. His professional background includes senior roles in the
financial sector, notably as Director of Internal Audit in a commercial bank,
alongside extensive experience in both private and public sector accounting.
He has published more than 25 peer-reviewed
high-ranking journal articles and four books, contributing to leading
international outlets such as the British Journal of Management, Accounting
Forum, Journal of Business Research, Journal of International Management,
Management International Review, International Journal of Finance &
Economics, European Journal of Finance, and Technological Forecasting and
Social Change. His research interests centre on environmental accounting and
accountability, corporate governance in multinational enterprises, artificial
intelligence and blockchain applications in accounting, cybersecurity risk
management, and green finance.
Dr. Attah Boakye’s work is widely recognized for
its intellectual rigor, practical relevance, and contribution to advancing
knowledge at the intersection of sustainability, governance, and emerging
technologies.
 

Research

My research explores how accounting, governance, and emerging technologies shape organisational accountability, risk, and sustainable value creation across both multinational corporations and small and medium sized enterprises. I am particularly interested in environmental accounting and accountability, the integration of the Sustainable Development Goals into corporate reporting, and the governance practices of multinational enterprises operating in Africa’s complex institutional environments.

A major strand of my work investigates how artificial intelligence, blockchain, and cybersecurity frameworks are transforming assurance, risk management, and the credibility of financial information in increasingly digital and interconnected economies. I also examine the dynamics of green finance and the regulatory architectures that support sustainable transitions in emerging and frontier markets.

Complementing these interests is my work in quantitative risk modelling, where I analyze how advanced analytical techniques can strengthen regulatory compliance, enhance strategic decision-making, and improve risk resilience within financial institutions. Collectively, my research seeks to advance theory and practice at the intersection of technological innovation, sustainability imperatives, and governance challenges, with a particular focus on the African context and other high-uncertainty environments.

Teaching

I serve as the module leader for Auditing and for Accounting and Finance for Managers, where I am responsible for curriculum design, delivery, and ensuring high academic standards. I have previously taught taxation, management accounting, and financial accounting across undergraduate and postgraduate programs. I also hold the role of Departmental Director for Professional Accreditation, overseeing our accreditation relationships with ACCA, ICAEW, and AIA and ensuring that our programs remain aligned with the expectations of leading professional bodies. Alongside these responsibilities, I actively mentor early-career researchers in developing their research trajectories and supervise PhD candidates in accounting and finance, contributing to the continued growth and strength of our research community.
