Shirley Gumede

Biography

Sibonginkosi Shirley GUMEDE joined the University of Bradford in March 2023 with extensive clinical expertise primarily in Adult General Surgical Nursing. On qualification as a Staff Nurse in 2003 from the University of Bradford, she worked in the Surgical Admissions Unit (SAU) at Bradford Royal Infirmary. She then joined the Progressive Care Unit (PCU) in 2008 and worked as a Senior Staff Nurse until 2015. Shirley then worked as an Independent Contractor for various Trusts around West Yorkshire, caring for patients in diverse care-settings such as rehabilitation and acute medicine. Whilst serving as a Nurse in the NHS, Shirley continued her personal and professional development primarily through part-time studies, gaining Masters’ level qualifications in Law and Public Health. She then joined the University of Bolton as a Nurse Lecturer in 2021. Shirley is an experienced academic with a Post Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher and Professional Education with accreditation as a Senior Fellow of Advance Higher Education. Senior roles have included programme leadership of the integrated Masters in Nursing programme (MNurse) and active membership within a rage of local and national healthcare and academic committees and bodies such as the Equality Impact Assessment committee and the Council of Deans of Health EDI committee. Shirley is currently working towards her professional doctorate with research exploring racial equality, considering relevant legislation, and its application to the NHS Nursing workforce. Shirley’s work and research focuses on inclusivity, addressing health inequalities and professional values. Shirley has a keen interest in research and has successfully bid for grant funding with NHS England to conduct primary research exploring student experience and inclusivity in Nursing. She is the author of the NHS England MNurse RePAIR Report and other publications include a review of work exploring experiences of ethnically minoritised women in healthcare leadership.
