About our Career and Employability Services

Career and Employability Services' key objectives are:

  • To deliver a range of professional and impartial career education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) services to students and graduates.
  • To deliver a range of professional placement and vacancy services to students and graduates.
  • To deliver a range of professional recruitment and business development services to local, regional and international employers and business intermediaries.
  • To contribute to the University achieving its Corporate Strategic objectives.
  • To contribute to the University achieving its Learning, Teaching and Quality objectives.
  • To deliver a range of opportunities for students and staff to go abroad (Study Placements; Work Placements; Short International Programmes; Teaching and Training).

We are made up of the following three teams.

Jo is Head of the Career and Employability Services and University lead for employability. She also represents the University with a range of local strategic organisations regarding employment and skills matters. Jo has extensive experience in the pre and post-16 schools and college sectors, HE sector and career guidance sector in a variety of roles including frontline service delivery, operation and strategic management, project management, training and development, quality assurance and teaching, and lecturing.

Career Consultants

Our Career Consultants offer one-to-one appointments throughout the year, with advice and guidance to enable you to make informed choices about your career plans and help you to achieve your aims and ambitions. They also run employability workshops and sessions within faculties, as well as teaching employability modules on certain courses.

Roy Christian

Career Consultant - Faculty of Engineering & Informatics

Roy is an experienced Career Consultant with responsibility for the Faculty of Engineering & Informatics. She has lead responsibility for the Career and Employability Services Programme of Employability Workshops and Presentations, Psychometric Tests, Career Ambassadors and International Students.  Roy has 17 years’ experience as a careers practitioner and has supported a range of students and graduates focusing on developing and enhancing their employability.

Roy has taught on the Personal, Career and Professional Development Module for Clinical Science Students (and acted as Personal Academic Tutor for Foundation and first year students), CPD Module for IT, Technology and Industrial Engineering and contributed careers sessions to other Module Programmes in various faculties.

She also works very closely with various companies and was recently nominated by IMI Precision Engineering (IMI Plc) for the National Undergraduate Employability Awards (sponsored by RateMyPlacement) for outstanding contribution to Work Experience.

A geology graduate, Roy worked initially as an Exploration Geologist with Sarawak Shell in Malaysia which included working on off-shore oil rigs in South China Sea.  Since coming to the UK, Roy worked for 13 years in HR and recruitment in a charitable organisation before switching role to become a Careers Practitioner.

Gillian is an experienced Careers Adviser currently working at the Universities of Bradford and Huddersfield. She has also worked previously at Sheffield Hallam and the University of Sheffield universities and as a schools and FE careers adviser. She has a very broad experience of 1:1 careers guidance, teaching career management and employability skills, across the full range of non-vocational, vocational and professional subject areas. She has a special interest in working with postgraduate taught and research students and is an active member of AGCAS's Postgraduate Students Task Group.

Gillian is also the coordinator for the Bradford Mentoring Programme.

He has over 20 years' experience of managing information services and a passion for driving up quality standards and customer satisfaction.

Daniel Penn

Careers Data and Planning Officer

Daniel is responsible for coordinating and analysing the Destinations of Leavers from HE survey (DLHE). He undertakes analysis of employment data at local and regional level (LMI) and is editor of “What Do Graduates Do?", an AGCAS publication. Daniel is also the Health and Safety Representative for SAS / CES. Daniel spent 2 years working in Personnel / HR for the NHS, and was involved in MBA student recruitment while working for the School of Management. He also has experience of ERDF funded projects working with SMEs locally.

Aruna Bhardwaj

Information Adviser (Communications)

Employer and Placement Services Team including International Opportunities

Our Employer and Placement Services Team work with a wide range of local and national employers, sourcing opportunities for students to gain work experience and employability skills through placements or part-time work opportunities. They advise and assist programme teams on the development of work-based learning activities in the curriculum and arrange for employer involvement where appropriate. The team also work with local and regional businesses to deliver a programme of paid student and graduate internships during the summer vacation or on graduation. They host regular careers fairs and other opportunities for employers to raise their profile on campus.

The International Opportunities team offers a wider range of opportunities abroad for our students and staff; processes applications and delivers induction for inbound exchange students; maintains and explores new exchange partnerships / opportunities abroad.

She manages the Employer & Placement Services Team who work alongside Career Consultants to develop work-based learning and placement opportunities in Faculty, deliver extra-curricular student and graduate internship programmes, organise career events and graduate recruitment fairs, manage a range of opportunities and funding for students to study or work abroad and run the University’s on-campus Student Employment Service

I am primarily based within the Faculty of Law, Management and Social Sciences, but available to all students to support with CV writing, interview preparation, finding work experience/internships and developing overall employability skills.

I also actively post on various platforms (particularly canvas) to keep students informed of all opportunities available, such as job vacancies, internships, webinar and anything else occurring on campus – so keep a look out!

Nicola is responsible for all of the operational aspects of the University Work Register and is the main contact for internal departments wishing to recruit student workers. She issues Casual Worker Agreements to students who work on campus and manages the monthly payroll for student staff.

Nicola is the main contact for employers wishing to promote their vacancies to our students and supports the administration of central Careers fairs held on campus. She is also part of the team providing one-to-one information and advice drop-in services to students and graduates.

Harry Nevard

International Opportunities Advisor

Harry works with the International Opportunities Coordinator to support students looking for study or work placements abroad and incoming exchange students across all subjects and levels. He supports the university’s participation in the exchange programmes including Turing, Worldwide Exchanges, and Short International Programmes. Harry works directly with students in daily sessions giving advice about studying abroad and supporting the application process, in addition to delivering presentations and workshops. He has personal experience of studying abroad and has worked in the International Offices of Keele University and the University of Pécs, Hungary. Before starting at Bradford, he completed a Masters in International Education and Globalisation at the University of Bath.
