Phlebotomy training courses at DHEZ

We work with Phlebotomy Training Services to deliver phlebotomy training courses. 

Please share with anyone interested in learning this skill for their work or if they are thinking about a change of career to become a phlebotomist.

Course dates

The Basic Phlebotomy Course covers the theory behind phlebotomy and provides participants with an opportunity to develop their practical skills. It is delivered by Phlebotomy Training Services: the first company in the UK to hold an accredited certificate. No previous experience is required for this course.

The course will look at the theory behind phlebotomy and participants will develop their practical skills using the most up to date techniques and equipment.  It will cover all of the competencies set out in CH132 (National Occupational Standard for Phlebotomy).

Phlebotomy Training Services use safety equipment in all of their training in accordance with the requirements of the Health & Safety (Sharp Instruments in Healthcare Regulations) 2013. Once you have completed this training you will have all of the skills and knowledge necessary to be able to work as a phlebotomist.

There will be no more than 10 participants per session on the course. Please note that this course runs 08:45-17:30 over two days.

Course details

The courses are run in newly refurbished facilities at the DHEZ and use simulation equipment to provide safe phlebotomy training skills.
The two-day course includes:

Day 1: Theory

  • Background to phlebotomy
  • Health & Safety in phlebotomy
  • Infection control
  • Informed consent
  • Anatomy & Physiology of arm
  • Site selection – good & bad veins
  • Complications
  • Needle stick injuries
  • Correct use of tourniquet
  • What is expected of a phlebotomist?

Day 2: Practical

  • Summary of common blood tests
  • Guide to venipuncture equipment
  • Venipuncture technique
  • Process of taking blood
  • Correct use of safer sharps
