About the speaker

Nazir Afzal OBE, was the Chief Crown Prosecutor for North West England and formerly Director in London. Most recently, he was the Chief Executive of the country’s Police and Crime Commissioners. During a 24 year career, he has prosecuted the most high profile cases in the country, advised on many others and led nationally on several legal topics including violence against women and girls, child sexual abuse and honour based violence.

He has prosecuted hundreds of ground breaking cases including the so-called Rochdale grooming gang case and drove the work that has changed the landscape of child protection. He sits on the boards, plays advisory roles and chairs several organisations and committees.

Nazir is a tutor for several leadership programmes in the public and private sector. He maintains a robust engagement with the media and industry and spends a considerable amount of time on charitable work. He has received several Honorary Fellowships and Doctorates from many universities in the UK. He has also received several awards for his service to society including being awarded an OBE by the Queen and named Legal Personality of the Year by the Society of Asian Lawyers in 2007.
