Project CAYMAN

Project CAYMAN - Chemistry Assets for Yorkshire Manufacturing - is an exciting 3 year £1.6 million programme. The project establishes new high-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) facilities at the University’s City Campus and is dedicated to delivering 30 fully funded research and innovation projects to regional SME. The collaborative projects will use the NMR facilities and high-field NMR techniques to investigate how they may be used to characterise macromolecular materials and complex chemical mixtures in an attempt to help develop new products and optimise current manufacturing processes.

In addition, the CAYMAN project team will offer 15 fully-funded training courses to facilitate knowledge exchange between the University and regional SMEs to demonstrate the potential benefits of modern techniques in NMR. The CAYMAN project started in October 2019 and we expect to deliver the first set of training in early 2021. This project is receiving £800,000 of funding from the England European Structural and Investment Funds Growth Programme 2014-2020. This fund is established by the European Union to help local areas stimulate their economic development. By investing in projects the funds will help to support innovation, businesses, skills and employment to improve local growth and create jobs.

The Northern Powerhouse is a key aspect of this Government’s approach to addressing the productivity gap in the North and ensuring a stronger, more sustainable economy for all parts of the UK. Alongside over €1.5 billion of European Regional Development Fund support for businesses and communities across the North, the government has awarded £3.4 billion in three rounds of Growth Deals across the Northern Powerhouse.

Jason has a PhD in Chemistry from University of York and 20 years’ experience in R&D and business development in the pharmaceutical and chemical research services sector. Jason has extensive experience in business development and business management and is currently responsible for growing the commercial and grant funded revenues of a number of Research and Knowledge Transfer Centres across the Faculty including Pharmaceutical Engineering Sciences, Institute of Cancer Therapeutics and Centre for Chemical and Structural Analysis. Professor Steve Rimmer

Professor Steve Rimmer, Head of School (Chemistry and Biosciences) at the University of Bradford

Stephen Rimmer is Professor of Chemistry and Head of the School of Chemistry and Biomaterials Chemistry at the University of Bradford. He was awarded a PhD in 1992 (Imperial College) for work on polyurethane graft copolymers. He spent a total of six years in industrial research and development (Macpherson Polymers Ltd. and Biocompatibles Ltd.) and two years as a post-doctoral fellow with Prof. J. R. Ebdon. His time in industry included development of many commercialised coating formulations and a new contact lens (The ProClear lens).

His research interests can be divided into two main areas: (1) synthesis and (2) biological applications of functional polymers.

Thomas Swift received a degree as a master of Chemistry (MChem Industry) from the University of York, having spent his fourth year at an industrial placement at AkzoNobel’s Decorative Paints division researching novel film functionality.

He began a PhD at the University of Sheffield where he specialised in stimuli responsive polymer synthesis and analysis, in a range of fields and applications including; fluorescence tagging, material characterisation, solution behavior of smart polymers and an understanding of water treatment processes. Practical experience with free radical, RAFT and ATRP methods of synthesising both linear polymers, branched polymers and hydrogels, extensive use of GPC techniques and time resolved fluorescence spectrometers.

He took up his post as Lecturer at the University of Bradford September 2016, originally as Lecturer in Polymer Characterisation before receiving a promotion to Lecturer in Polymer Chemistry in 2019. He is now the Programme Lead for the BSc Chemistry Apprenticeship, a level 6 training program for the Laboratory Scientist standard. He is also a co-investigator of the Project Cayman ERDF / Northern Powerhouse industrial collaboration funding designed to encourage access to academic expertise across the north of England.
